The much-anticipated acoustic Songbook tour provides fans with an intimate “Storytellers” like setting where Cornell easily interacts with his audience and shares insights about his music. “It brought a spark back to being in the studio and being a songwriter.” “It just fills up my life musically with anything and everything I can think of doing. We have just finished the next Soundgarden album, and before that I was writing these acoustic songs for films. “Also I think the same thing with writing and recording. “I imagine this is something that is rare for someone in my shoes, to be able to have such a broad dramatic different approach from one tour to another and be able to sustain that. “But then, after a tour of Soundgarden, the notion of just going up in front of a microphone to a group of people I can actually talk to and hear them speak back – well, it’s exciting. It was so nice to stand in front of huge loud amps and feedback again. “I was so happy as I’d been doing a lot of these acoustic shows and I’m always alone on stage, and it’s a very quiet and almost churchy affair. I was touring with Songbook, and as soon as that was done I flew directly from Australia to New Orleans to do a couple of shows with Soundgarden. “To be able to go between the two is unbelievably lucky. “We did a Soundgarden tour that ended at Download (June 10) then I’m on this acoustic Songbook tour, and at the end of that Soundgarden plays Hyde Park,” he tells me.
